The Union Joke

The Union Jack is an elegantly designed symbol of the “harmonious” union of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (although Wales is not represented in the design). It’s been an enduring symbol of British might and of brutal colonialism. It lives on as a national flag for the UK and, in canton form, in far too many flags of territories, states, provinces and (supposedly) independent countries. This work is asking residents of those areas to reperceive the symbols floating above their heads. They can demand change in the form of ripping out this outdated and irrelevant symbol that has caused misery to so many.
